Cultivation and Primary Processing Owning to the various cosmetic, medicinal and other applications of henna, the cultivation of this shrub is fast catching up pace. Henna is primarily a tropical plantand is widely grown in the middle east and the south-asian countries. With increasing popularity it is now being largely cultivated as a highly commercial plant.

Henna is grown in semi dried regions with temperature upto 20 degrees and above. The content of rainfall needs to be minimum for the ideal growth of henna trees. The entire henna shrub grows in a span of 5 years given the right set of climatic conditions. It startsbearing the fruits and flowers in 3 -4 years of cultivation.

The germination process is usuallly slow. Seeds are mostly sown in March endor the beginning of April. The plants are potted separately after germinationand are watered regularly as and when required. Normally henna plants are notaffected by pests which makes it easier to grow and cultivate henna. It requires smallquantities of fertilizers.
