Climate:
Henna ideally grows in climates where minimum temperature is above 50
degrees. This explains that it grows well when subjected to highest levels
of heat with lowest moisture content. Henna is a small tree like shrub which
is usually grown unsheltered in open fields. They take about 5 years to
mature and produce leaves with considerable levels of tannin.Henna grown in areas with high moisture content can be used only for fresh use but not for drying purposes as they contain very low levels of tannin. Tannin, however is responsible for rendering the dark maroon color to henna.
Soil: Soil requirement for henna includes semi dry soil with minimum amount of water. This is because less water encourages the development of tannin in henna leaves, an ingredient that gives henna its characteristic reddish brown color. Henna trees can also thrive in drought and sandy soils but it grows best in areas with water retentive soils. For regions where rain fall is even, atleast two dry periods are a must to ensure post harvest and leaf-drying. It grows well in regions with rainfall not more than 500mm to 700mm a year.
